Comment: We applaud the realisation in Government that speed cameras don’t deal with the vast majority of causes of accidents on the road. New police powers to deal with careless driving on the spot would only impact on accident figures if they increase traffic patrols to catch the careless drivers often seen on the road. Given the police spending cuts that’s unlikely.

Comment: Risking an average fine of £177 makes breaking the law a no-brainer for many dishonest drivers - the alternative is to pay up to £1000 for insurance. As the law got tough on insured and licensed motorists for minor speeding offenses it become soft on highly dangerous uninsured drivers.
