We support the abolition of cash for cameras schemes in the UK, the removal of speed cameras where accidents have not decreased, and refocusing of police resources to pursue the real menaces of the road: uninsured, unlicensed, or drunk / drug drivers and unregistered, untaxed, or poorly maintained vehicles.

Conservative councillors in Derby have pledged to rip up all speed cameras if they win the upcoming local elections. Councillor Harvey Jennings said the £230,000 currently spent on mobile and fixed cameras would instead go into other road safety measures, such as vehicle-activated speed signs.

Trials around the country a few years ago showed that vehicle activated signs were more effective in slowing down traffic and as a bonus are considerably cheaper to erect and maintain.

Mr Jennings went on to say "We believe speed cameras have had their day and that we need to be looking at alternative speed reduction and safety measures. One example is the speed signs which illuminate if you drive towards them too quickly. They are effective."

However, Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership says the move would have a huge impact on its ability to keep the 15 fixed cameras and 18 mobile camera routes in the city going.

Our comment: Good to hear more councillors looking at unbiased facts and more effective & intelligent ways to slow down speeding vehicles. No surprise that the local camera partnership object - trying to protect their income and jobs.
