Cameras to enforce 20mph zones instead of speed humps Published: 15th June 2006 Category: New Traps Reader's Rage: [31votes] Networks of speed cameras are being used in trials to enforce 20mph zones rather than relying on speed humps to slow motorists down. The trials will run until March 2007 in Camden, north London and Belfast.
The cameras work by recording the number plate of each vehicle and logging the exact time it was spotted. A camera at one end of a road will record this information first and when a vehicles reaches the other end of the road another camera will do the same. The time difference is calculated at the control centre which is used to produce the average speed of the vehicle. If this is above a pre-set threshold (such as 24mph for example) a speeding ticket will automatically be sent to the driver. (Completely illegal motorists are of course exempt from this system like they are with any driving offense because their DVLA records are non-existent or incorrect)
The cameras don't need to be linked to each other so no roadworks are required to connect cables - except to the telephone system. Transport for London aim to develop many 20mph zones using this system near schools and in residential areas.
Information sourced in part or in full from: BBC NewsOur comment: These cameras will allow the worst kind of drivers to speed down residential roads without any physical restraints - and these illegal drivers will get away with it because their whereabouts can't be traced. Printer friendly version
